The Lézard Rouge (Red Lizard) is a historic tourist train that offers one of the most unique experiences in Southern Tunisia.
Origin: The train was built in France at the beginning of the 20th century and originally belonged to the Bey of Tunis, the country's highest authority at the time.
Initial Purpose: Although it is now a tourist attraction, it was initially built for the Gafsa Railway Company with the objective of transporting phosphate extracted from the rich mines in the area.
Restoration: After years of abandonment, the train was restored in 1984 for tourist use.
Route: The train operates a round-trip route departing from the city of Metlaoui (Gafsa Governorate) and reaching Redeyef (or intermediate points like the Kefeddour mining station on some tours). The journey travels through the impressive Selja Gorges (or Canyon), a spectacular natural site inaccessible by road.
Views: The route offers magnificent views of red and pink rock canyons, the arid desert, and unique rock formations. It is common for the train to make photo stops along the route for passengers to admire the scenery.
Duration: The complete round-trip excursion lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Access to Metlaoui: Metlaoui is located about 40 km from Tozeur. Travelers usually arrive by car or as part of organized tours (often in 4x4 vehicles or minibuses) from nearby cities such as Tozeur or Gafsa.
Scheduled Departures (subject to confirmation and availability):
Tuesday: 10:00 AM
Friday and Sunday: 10:30 AM
Important Note: The excursion is subject to reaching a minimum number of participants, so it cannot be confirmed long in advance. It is recommended to check the operation schedule and book through a local travel agency.
